Bhubaneswar, 25 May (H.S.) : The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday strongly refuted allegations made by Rajya Sabha MP Debashish Samantaray following his resignation from the party, asserting that he had been given several key responsibilities and opportunities during his political career under the BJD.
Responding to Samantaray’s claim that he was “systematically belittled” within the party, senior BJD leader Pramila Mallik said the former MP had enjoyed the confidence of party president Naveen Patnaik and had been entrusted with multiple important positions.
“Naveen Patnaik made him an MLA, appointed him Chairman of the Film Development Corporation, gave him the responsibility of BJD president for Cuttack district, and later nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. Despite receiving all these opportunities, he chose to leave the party,” Mallik said.
The senior BJD leader further alleged that Samantaray’s decision to part ways with the party was motivated by personal considerations. She claimed that he may have joined hands with the BJP believing it would help address his individual concerns and business interests.
Mallik also dismissed Samantaray’s assertion that he felt neglected within the BJD, arguing that elected representatives are expected to serve the public rather than seek personal benefits from the party.
“He was elected as a Member of Parliament to serve the people, not to be served by the party. His responsibility was to raise issues concerning Odisha and work for the welfare of its people. MLAs and MPs are entrusted with public service, and one cannot expect to enjoy power, position and respect without contributing to the party and the people,” she stated.
Samantaray had earlier announced his resignation from the BJD, alleging that he was being systematically sidelined within the organisation. His departure has triggered a fresh political war of words between the former parliamentarian and the regional party leadership.
