Washington DC, 22 May (H.S.):
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a bold reversal in his European defense strategy, declaring that the United States will deploy 5,000 additional troops to Poland—a move that overrides the Pentagon’s recent decision to cancel a similar deployment and deepens tensions with NATO allies over the Iran conflict.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform Thursday, stating, “I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 troops to Poland,” framing the deployment as a reward for Poland’s steadfast support in the Iran war.
The president emphasized his close relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, a nationalist leader whose 2025 election victory Trump had endorsed, underscoring the move as a personal diplomatic gesture rather than a traditional NATO consultation.
This declaration blindsided Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who had signed a memo last week halting the deployment of 4,000 U.S. troops to Poland—part of a broader Pentagon plan withdrawing 5,000 soldiers from Germany over six to 12 months amid escalating spats with Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the Iran war.
The earlier cancellation drew criticism from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, who viewed it as a destabilizing cut to Europe’s military posture.
Trump’s latest move comes as the Iran war intensifies, with Washington demanding that European allies shoulder more defense burdens and contribute to a peacekeeping force in the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway Tehran has effectively closed.
The Pentagon’s initial pullout from Germany, announced in early May, followed Merz’s criticism of U.S. handling of Iran talks, with a Pentagon spokesperson citing a “thorough review” of Europe’s force posture.
Vice President JD Vance initially downplayed the reversal, stating last week that the 4,000-troop Poland deployment was merely “delayed, not canceled,” while insisting Europe must “stand on its own two feet.”
However, Trump’s Friday announcement signals a proactive shift, redirecting resources from Germany to Poland as a punitive measure for lackluster European support.
The deployment announcement rattles NATO cohesion, as Poland—a vocal proponent of hosting U.S. troops pulled from Germany—welcomes the move for bolstering its eastern flank against Russian threats. Yet, European leaders warn it could fracture alliance unity, with Germany’s pullout already trimming 14% of the 36,000 U.S. troops stationed there.
Trump’s focus on Iran’s nuclear ambitions and Middle East dominance, highlighted in recent remarks stressing it as the “only issue that counts,” fuels global uncertainty.
The move to Poland also underscores his transactional foreign policy, leveraging troop deployments to reward allies and pressure critics amid a turbulent 2026 midterm season.
