
Mumbai, May 22 (H.S.): Domestic equity markets closed in positive territory on Friday, the final trading session of the week, supported by upbeat global cues and strong buying in heavyweight banking stocks. The benchmark Sensex gained 232 points, while the Nifty advanced by 65 points.
The 30-share benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Sensex, closed 231.99 points or 0.31 per cent higher at 75,415.35. During the trading session, the Sensex had at one point surged as much as 627.61 points.
Similarly, the benchmark index of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), Nifty, ended 64.60 points or 0.27 per cent higher at 23,719.30.
Among the Sensex constituents, shares of Trent Limited, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Asian Paints, Hindustan Unilever, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Bajaj Finance emerged as major gainers.
On the other hand, shares of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, ITC Limited, Power Grid Corporation of India and Bharat Electronics Limited ended lower.
Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude rose 2.3 per cent to reach $104.7 per barrel.
In other Asian markets, South Korea’s KOSPI, Japan’s Nikkei, China’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng indices all closed with gains. European markets were also trading higher during afternoon trade.
In the previous trading session on Thursday, the Sensex had declined 135.03 points or 0.18 per cent to close at 75,183.36. Similarly, the NSE Nifty had slipped 4.30 points or 0.018 per cent to settle at 23,654.70.
