Aizawl, 19 May (HS): The 51.38-km broad-gauge Bairabi–Sairang railway line is bringing a major transformation to the lives of people in Mizoram by improving connectivity, reducing transportation costs and opening new avenues for economic growth.
For decades, Mizoram remained heavily dependent on road transport through difficult mountainous terrain, often leading to high travel expenses, delays in supply of essential goods and disruptions during landslides and monsoon seasons. With Aizawl now connected to the national railway network, residents are benefiting from faster, safer and more affordable transportation.
The railway line is significantly reducing the prices of daily commodities, construction materials and fuel by lowering freight costs. Traders and businesses are gaining easier access to markets across the country, while local farmers and entrepreneurs have found better opportunities to transport their products outside the state.
The project is also generating employment opportunities in transport, tourism, hospitality and trade sectors. Improved connectivity with cities such as Guwahati and Kolkata could encourage more tourists to visit Mizoram, boosting local businesses and creating income opportunities for local communities.
Students, patients and working professionals are also benefiting from easier travel to other parts of the country for education, healthcare and employment purposes. The rail link has improved access to medical facilities and educational institutions outside the state at a lower cost.
Apart from economic benefits, the railway connectivity is strengthening social integration and bring Mizoram closer to the rest of the country. Officials believe the line is playing a crucial role in accelerating development in remote areas and improving overall quality of life in the state.
The Bairabi–Sairang line is a 51.38-km broad-gauge railway in Mizoram, operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it connects Sairang (just 20 km from the state capital, Aizawl) to the national rail network, vastly reducing travel times and boosting local trade.
Slashed the Bairabi to Aizawl journey from 6-7 hours by road to under 2 hours by train and connects Silchar (Assam) in 3 hours. It Built across highly challenging, hilly terrain, the route features 48 tunnels (spanning 12.85 km) and 142 bridges. The Krung Bridge at Sairang, which boasts India's tallest railway pier bridge at 114 meters—taller than the Qutub Minar. Includes 5 stations, 4 of which are brand new: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. The project was executed at a cost of approximately ₹8,711 crore.
Indian Railways has also planned a future extension of the line towards Hbichhuah near the Myanmar border, which could further transform Mizoram into an important trade gateway connecting Northeast India with Southeast Asia through the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project.----------
