Chandigarh, 18 May (H.S.): Indian tennis player Karman Kaur Thandi has secured a place in the women’s singles qualifying draw of the French Open at Roland Garros. She will face France’s Harmony Tan in the opening round of the qualifiers. Both players are unseeded in the qualifying draw.
Karman Kaur Thandi earned entry into the prestigious qualifying competition through her protected ranking (PR) of 238. Owing to this ranking, she was placed 119th on the official entry list. The protected ranking system allows players returning from long-term injuries to regain access to top-level tournaments.
Her return to the Grand Slam stage following injury is being viewed as a major achievement for Indian tennis. With her participation in the tournament, India’s absence from Grand Slam singles events has also come to an end. Karman will now compete for a coveted place in the main draw against some of the world’s top players.
Currently training at the Roundglass Tennis Academy in Chandigarh, Karman has worked extensively to regain her fitness and form. Her determined comeback has also become a source of inspiration for young players at the academy.
Following the release of the draw, Karman Kaur Thandi said:
“Roland Garros, for me, is a reminder that setbacks do not define who you are — the courage to make a comeback does. I am proud to represent India on one of the biggest stages in the world. Every player dreams of moments like these. I am stepping onto the courts at Roland Garros with purpose, gratitude, and confidence.”
She further added:
“Returning from injury and competing again at this level makes this journey even more special. It proves that perseverance and belief can take you back to where you truly belong.”
The Roundglass Tennis Academy also described Karman’s return as an inspiring moment for Indian tennis and wished her success in the tournament.
