New Delhi, May 18 (H.S.):
Punjab Kings have put an end to speculation surrounding the fitness of their premier fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, clarifying that he is completely fit and has been training regularly with the squad.
In an official statement, the franchise said, “Contrary to certain reports circulating in the media, we would like to clarify that our lead pacer and the team’s highest wicket-taker, Arshdeep Singh, is fully fit. He has been training consistently with the team. The team management is extremely satisfied with his progress, and he is fully prepared for the crucial matches ahead in the tournament.”
Punjab Kings further added that Arshdeep’s energy, rhythm, and commitment during the net sessions have been highly encouraging, and the team remains confident that he will continue to play a vital role in the remainder of the season.
The controversy began ahead of the Punjab Kings’ match against Mumbai Indians when Arshdeep Singh shared a Snapchat story featuring Mumbai batter Tilak Varma. In the post, Arshdeep referred to Tilak as “darkness,” following which he faced allegations of making a racist remark on social media.
The incident triggered widespread criticism online, prompting Punjab Kings to issue a public clarification regarding the matter.
Punjab Kings’ Head of Sports Science, Andrew Leipus, defended Arshdeep during a press conference, stating that the pacer’s behavior within the dressing room has remained completely normal.
Leipus said, “I do not follow social media very closely, but I am aware that certain discussions are taking place. As far as Arshdeep’s behavior is concerned, he is absolutely normal. He remains calm and is always focused on giving his best.”
He also hinted that Arshdeep had been dealing with some physical discomfort during the season, which may have contributed to fluctuations in his performances.
“Over the past few weeks, he has been feeling physically much better. His attitude and conduct have remained as positive as ever. He is an extremely energetic presence in the dressing room,” Leipus added. However, he did not disclose any specific injury details.
Punjab Kings’ campaign in the Indian Premier League 2026 season has also been disappointing in recent weeks. After a strong start to the tournament, the team has now suffered five consecutive defeats, severely denting its playoff hopes.
With two league matches remaining, Punjab Kings currently have 13 points and must win both of their remaining fixtures to stay alive in the playoff race.
Punjab’s next match is scheduled in Dharamshala against defending champions and current table-toppers Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, Punjab Kings have already lost both of their previous matches in Dharamshala this season, further increasing the pressure on the team.
