Hooghly, 18 May (H.S.): A long-standing garbage dump located behind the ticket counter near Rishra No. 3 Rail Gate was cleared on Monday with the help of a JCB machine.

Despite the intense heat, the cleanliness drive was personally supervised by local BJP councillor Shashi Singh Jha. A large quantity of garbage was removed during the operation.

Councillor Shashi Singh Jha said that the area houses temples dedicated to Shyam Baba, Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva. It is also a major stand for rickshaws, toto vehicles and autos, with a large number of people commuting through the area every day. She said garbage had been accumulating there for years and repeated requests had been made to the municipality for its removal, but no concrete action had been taken earlier.

She further claimed that administrative changes have become visible after the change in power in the state. According to him, the cleaning of the area will provide relief and convenience to devotees visiting the temples, pedestrians, and drivers of rickshaws, toto vehicles and autos.
