Kolkata, 18 May (H.S.): Police action against leaders and workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) continued across West Bengal on Monday in connection with allegations of corruption, extortion and intimidation, with several arrests reported from different districts.

In the first incident, former Dinhata Municipality chairman Gouri Shankar Maheshwari was arrested on Monday in connection with an alleged building plan approval scam.

A day earlier, Dinhata Municipality employee Moumita Bhattacharya had also been taken into custody. She was produced before a court on Sunday and remanded to three days of police custody.

In another case, Shatdeep Ghatak, the Trinamool Congress president of Durgapur-Faridpur Block in West Burdwan district, was arrested on charges of extortion and spreading terror.

According to police, he had allegedly been threatening BJP workers and local residents while carrying out illegal extortion activities over a prolonged period. He was arrested during a late-night operation conducted by Faridpur police and later produced before the Durgapur sub-divisional court.

In Asansol, TMC worker Raju Ahowalia was also arrested in multiple cases, including allegations of extortion.

Meanwhile, Kumaresh Bhuiyan has also come under the police scanner. Kumaresh, the son of former MLA Mamata Bhuiyan, has been accused of extortion and hooliganism.

Several allegations of corruption had surfaced against TMC leaders during the previous government’s tenure in West Bengal. Following the change in government, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed police to take strict action in such cases.

Since then, police operations have intensified across districts, with accused leaders and workers increasingly coming under legal scrutiny.
