Kolkata, 16 May (H.S.): An FIR has been lodged against Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee over allegations of threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah and using provocative language during an election campaign. The Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station registered the case on Friday evening based on a complaint filed by one Rajib Sarkar.
According to police sources, the complainant had initially lodged a complaint at Baguiati Police Station on May 5. Acting on that complaint, police later registered an FIR against Abhishek under six different sections of law. The complaint alleged that the language used by the Trinamool leader during election campaigning could have triggered unrest and law and order problems in the state.
Reacting to the development, complainant Rajib Sarkar claimed that if the Trinamool Congress returned to power again, common people could face attacks and intimidation. He further asserted that the complaint was not politically motivated in any manner.
Rajib, who describes himself as a social activist, had earlier lodged complaints regarding bars and dance performances in the Baguiati area. However, allegations related to human trafficking have also been levelled against him in the past. Rejecting those accusations, he maintained that individuals working for social change often face such allegations.
Police have started an investigation into the matter.
