Guwahati, 16 May (HS): Major infrastructure projects under the Bharatmala Pariyojana are rapidly reshaping connectivity and economic prospects in Assam and the wider Northeast region. Several highway expansion and road development works are currently underway with the aim of strengthening transport, trade and strategic mobility.
Under Assam Mala 3.0, launched earlier this year, road projects worth over ₹3,200 crore are being implemented across more than 900 km. The initiative is expected to improve inter-state and rural connectivity while boosting access to remote and tribal areas.
Among the key projects, the four-laning of the NH-37 Silchar-Budhanagar section is progressing rapidly. In Dima Hasao district, a 229-km disaster-resilient highway is being developed to ensure uninterrupted movement even during landslides and adverse weather conditions. Work is also underway on the NH-306 Silchar-Vairengte-Sairang corridor to strengthen road links between Assam and Mizoram.
Officials believe the projects will significantly reduce travel time, improve logistics, and encourage industrial and commercial growth in the region. The improved highway network is also expected to benefit sectors such as tourism, agriculture, tea trade and transport services.
The road infrastructure push is considered strategically important as well, especially for improving connectivity to border and sensitive areas in the Northeast. Faster movement of goods, emergency services and security forces is expected to strengthen regional preparedness and integration.
Experts, however, have stressed the need to balance rapid infrastructure growth with environmental protection and proper rehabilitation measures in ecologically sensitive areas.
The Bharatmala-linked projects are being viewed as a major step toward transforming Assam into a key connectivity hub of Northeast India.-----------
