Mumbai, 15 May (H.S.):
The Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Conference, held in Mumbai under India’s presidency, has concluded with a sharp focus on the future of the natural diamond sector. The four‑day global meeting placed emphasis on transparency, governance, and operational reforms in the natural diamond trade.
During the conference, KP participants, observers, industry stakeholders, and representatives of civil‑society organisations deliberated on themes linked to the future of the natural diamond domain on a single platform. Under the overarching theme of “Credibility, Compliance & Consumer Confidence” (3C), India’s presidency sought to strengthen transparency, good governance, and operational systems within the global natural diamond trade.
Addressing the closing session of the intersessional conference, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said India recognises the critical role of the Kimberley Process in sustaining trust, responsibility, and shared prosperity in natural diamonds, given that the country is a leading global hub for diamond cutting and polishing. He added that, under India’s presidency, the country is firmly committed to working with all participants and stakeholders to promote the 3C principles and to reinforce the relevance of the KP in an increasingly dynamic global market.
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, established under UN General Assembly Resolution 55/56 of 2000, is a global initiative aimed at preventing conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate trade and promoting responsible sourcing throughout the natural‑diamond supply chain.
As a major global centre for diamond cutting and polishing, India has reiterated its commitment to the objectives of the Kimberley Process and pledged to champion transparency, stability, and responsible practices in the natural‑diamond sector.
