New Delhi, 15 May (H.S.): The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a total penalty of ₹15 lakh on two coaching institutes for misleading advertisements related to the results of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
The Central Consumer Protection Authority has passed a final order against Motion Education Private Limited, imposing a penalty of ₹10 lakh, while Career Line Coaching (CLC), Sikar, has been fined ₹5 lakh. The CCPA took this action after finding both institutes liable for misleading advertisements, unfair trade practices, and violation of consumer rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
The CCPA stated that the advertisements issued by these two institutes obscured key information about the courses being promoted, even as they prominently highlighted only their success stories in marketing material. In the orders passed by CCPA Chairperson Nidhi Khare and Commissioner Anupam Mishra, both institutes were found to have violated the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and deemed guilty of resorting to unfair trade practices and infringing upon consumers’ rights.
The CCPA’s decision is aimed at safeguarding and promoting consumer rights as a class and at ensuring that no false or misleading advertisement is published in respect of any goods or services in contravention of the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. The authority has taken nationwide action against deceptive coaching‑sector advertisements and unfair trade practices, issuing more than 60 notices to coaching institutes and imposing penalties exceeding ₹1.39 crore.
