- Congress Opposing UCC Keeping Nagaon Lok Sabha Polls in Mind: Bhuban Bora
Guwahati, 14 May (HS): Former Assam Pradesh Congress President and newly elected BJP MLA Bhupen Bora on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Congress party and its national spokesperson Pawan Khera, describing Khera as a “suicide bomber” for the Congress and claiming that “the bomb is now under testing.”
Addressing the media, Bora alleged that the Congress has been opposing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) with an eye on the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha election. He claimed that the party was attempting to politicise the issue for electoral gains.
The BJP legislator further stated that the Assam government would introduce the UCC in the Assembly on May 26. According to him, several key provisions related to marriage age, polygamy and daughters’ property rights would be included under the proposed law.
Bora also criticized Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi for opposing the proposed legislation. He alleged that both leaders were standing against the government’s efforts to curb polygamy and accused them of taking an anti-indigenous stance on the issue.
