Kolkata, 13 May (H.S.) : Police have arrested three brothers associated with the Trinamool Congress in connection with multiple criminal cases in West Bengal’s Katwa area, triggering a fresh political controversy in the region.

The accused local Trinamool Congress leader Babulal Sheikh, Youth Trinamool Congress leader Kochi Sheikh, and Chhattu Sheikh, were arrested on Tuesday by officers of Katwa Police Station. Police confirmed on Wednesday that all three belong to the same family.

Following their arrest, the trio was taken to Katwa Sub-Divisional Hospital for mandatory medical examination before being produced before a local court later in the day.

According to police officials, several cases have been registered against the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators have alleged that the group had been involved in intimidation and exerting influence in the locality for a prolonged period, creating an atmosphere of fear among residents.

Police sources said custody of the accused has been sought for further interrogation.

The arrests have intensified political tensions in Katwa, with leaders from rival parties levelling sharp accusations against each other.

Krishna Ghosh, newly elected BJP legislator from Katwa, alleged that criminal elements were shielded during the previous Trinamool Congress regime.

“Such anti-social elements flourished during the Trinamool regime. They were allegedly protected by the ruling establishment. Now the administration is performing its duty, and legal action will be taken against the accused,” Ghosh said.

Meanwhile, family members of the accused have denied the allegations, claiming the arrests were politically motivated. They also stated that the individuals were initially summoned by police before being taken into custody.

The incident has sparked widespread debate in local political circles, with investigations currently underway.

Police action against Trinamool Congress leaders and workers accused of criminal activities has reportedly increased since the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly election results, further intensifying the political climate in the state.
