Kolkata, 13 May (H.S.) : A demolition drive was launched in Tiljala on Wednesday after the state administration initiated strict action against alleged illegal industrial structures in the area following a recent fire incident.
Bulldozers were brought into the locality in the afternoon, while tensions escalated as security forces, including central security personnel, cordoned off the area to prevent any untoward incident.
Authorities stated that the factory where a fire broke out on Tuesday was found to be operating without proper approvals and was therefore classified as illegal. Following this, municipal teams arrived to carry out demolition of the structure.
Officials said the crackdown on illegal factories is part of a broader enforcement drive ordered by the state leadership. According to directives, any industrial unit operating without approved building plans will face demolition and immediate disconnection of electricity and water supply.
The Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, has reportedly taken a strict stance following the death of two people in the Tiljala incident. He has ordered a comprehensive review of illegal industrial units across Kolkata, including areas such as Kasba, Tiljala, Mominpur and Ekbalpur.
Authorities will examine building plan approvals and identify unauthorised structures after a committee submits its report, following which further action will be taken, officials added.
