New Delhi, 09 April (H.S.):
A public interest litigation filed in the Supreme Court demands restricting Aadhaar card issuance solely to children up to six years old, arguing that adults no longer need new cards given near-universal coverage of 144 crore—roughly 99% of India's population.
Lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay's plea contends that foreign infiltrators from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are exploiting Common Service Centres by paying for fake Aadhaars, posing a national security risk.
The petition urges that Aadhaar applications for those over six be processed exclusively at Tehsildar or Sub-Divisional Magistrate offices to curb fraud, as infiltrators are unlikely to pose as infants .
It further calls for mandatory undertakings from applicants affirming the accuracy of their details and awareness that forging documents constitutes a grave offense, bolstering security and fraud prevention.
With over 144 crore Aadhaars already generated per UIDAI data as of March 31, 2026, the cap targets newborns while tightening verification for others.
