New Delhi, 07 April (H.S.):
The Central Government assured the Supreme Court on Monday that all pending matters related to CCTV camera installations in police stations nationwide will be settled within two weeks.
Attorney General R Venkataramani, representing the Centre before a bench led by Justice Vikram Nath, stated he is personally monitoring progress and significant headway has been made through ongoing meetings with the court-appointed amicus curiae and other officials. The Union Home Secretary also appeared during the hearing.
The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance on September 4, 2025, of media reports highlighting non-functional CCTVs in police stations amid ~11 custodial deaths in the preceding 7-8 months.
This follows the court's December 2, 2020 order mandating CCTV cameras with audio-video recording at all key police station locations—entry/exit points, lock-ups, corridors, reception, verandas, inspection rooms, and station halls—with footage preserved for 18 months to curb police excesses and custodial torture. Despite directives, compliance remains incomplete in several areas.
