Guwahati, 06 April (HS): With just two days remaining for the Assam assembly elections, the Pradesh Congress on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, demanding the cancellation of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s candidature over alleged discrepancies in his election affidavit.
A Congress delegation led by Jalukbari constituency candidate Bidisha Neog, along with former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, AICC secretary Manoj Chauhan, and Kamrup (Metro) District Congress president Swapna Das, met the Chief Electoral Officer and submitted the memorandum highlighting their objections.
In the memorandum, the Congress alleged that Himanta Biswa Sarma had deliberately concealed details of his assets in the affidavit submitted for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The party urged the election authority to take immediate cognizance of the matter.
The delegation further demanded a thorough and time-bound investigation into the authenticity and completeness of the affidavit. It also called for initiating appropriate legal procedures to cancel Sarma’s candidature on the grounds of submitting a defective affidavit.
Additionally, the Congress stated that filing a false affidavit attracts penal provisions under Section 125A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and sought the initiation of criminal proceedings against Sarma, which could entail imprisonment of up to six months if proven guilty.---------
