Guwahati, 03 April (HS): Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday asserted that Muslim voters in Assam would unite in favour of the All India United Democratic Front in the upcoming assembly elections scheduled for April 9, while campaigning in the state for the second consecutive day.
Owaisi, who arrived in Assam on Thursday, has been actively campaigning in Lower Assam districts such as Barpeta and Dhubri, and is currently focusing on the Barak Valley region. Addressing public meetings, he appealed to voters to consolidate their support behind AIUDF candidates, projecting the party as a decisive force in the state’s political landscape.
Campaigning in support of AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, Owaisi expressed confidence that the party’s 29 candidates would emerge victorious, claiming that the electoral outcome in Assam would be significantly influenced by AIUDF’s performance. He emphasised that unity among Muslim voters would play a crucial role in the election.
Targeting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, Owaisi accused it of indulging in divisive politics and also criticised the Congress for remaining “silent” on such issues. He argued that this political environment has strengthened support for AIUDF among minority communities.
Raising concerns over the ongoing eviction drives in the state, Owaisi termed the actions “unconstitutional” and alleged large-scale displacement of people. He stated that Ajmal had approached the Supreme Court on the issue and referred to directives regarding rehabilitation in case of forest land evictions. He further alleged that thousands of people had been displaced, calling it a violation of human rights.
Owaisi also highlighted challenges faced by minority communities in Assam, stating that adequate safeguards for their rights and security were lacking. He said his visit to the state was aimed at raising concerns regarding the rights and protection of minority groups.
He further criticised both the BJP and previous Congress governments over their handling of issues like the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), alleging that minority communities have long been used for political gains rather than being provided lasting solutions.------------
