East Bardhaman, 27 April (H.S.): Tension gripped Purbasthali in East Bardhaman district of West Bengal after a violent clash broke out between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Monday afternoon, the final day of campaigning ahead of the second phase of polling. The incident occurred in the Nashratpur area under Nadanghat police station limits, leaving several people injured on both sides.
According to sources, the situation escalated when a BJP rally was passing through Nashratpur on its way to Samudragarh. A confrontation broke out between supporters of the two parties, which quickly turned violent.
The BJP alleged that during their rally, some TMC workers stationed near a party office raised slogans like “Jai Bangla” and pelted stones at their supporters. The TMC, however, claimed that their workers were sitting inside their party office when BJP workers suddenly attacked them.
Local reports suggest that the clash soon turned into a full-blown confrontation, with workers from both sides engaging in physical assault. Allegations have also been made that people were beaten up after being forced onto the road. Several motorcycles and toto vehicles were reportedly vandalized during the violence.
The police from Nadanghat station and central forces rushed to the spot to control the situation. Even in the presence of security personnel, both groups reportedly remained aggressive, prompting further deployment of forces to restore order.
At least four people have been injured in the incident—two from TMC and two from BJP. All the injured have been admitted to Kalna Sub-Divisional Hospital for treatment.
Following the clash, additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further escalation. The incident has added to the already tense political atmosphere in the region on the final day of campaigning.
