Kolkata, 24 April (H.S.):
In the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will fail to win even a single seat in some districts this time, with first-phase voting trends clearly signaling a public mandate for change. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leader, made this bold claim on Friday.
Addressing an election rally in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district, PM Modi asserted that TMC's account will not open in certain districts. He noted record turnout in the first phase and urged voters to surpass it on April 29 in the second phase, ensuring TMC's defeat.
PM Modi expressed alarm over the campus atmosphere at Jadavpur University, citing threats inside the premises, anti-national slogans on walls, and students being forced into processions. He stressed the need to restore a proper academic environment, questioning how a state government unable to secure its premier educational institution could manage the entire state.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit back sharply, questioning the propriety of such language against meritorious students. She highlighted Jadavpur University's consistent high rankings in the central government's National Institutional Ranking Framework, emphasizing that its students earn their place through merit and emerge with knowledge, ideas, and critical thinking—not chaos, but excellence in education.
At the Baruipur rally, PM Modi accused the TMC government of neglecting socially backward classes despite the Centre launching numerous welfare and development schemes for the state, which were obstructed in implementation. He charged that the current regime has consistently worked against the interests of these communities.
