
Nagaon (Assam), 24 April (HS): Nagaon Session Court on Friday sentenced 20 convicts to life imprisonment in the widely discussed Abhi-Neel lynching case. The court also imposed a fine of ₹20,000 on each of the convicts while pronouncing the quantum of punishment after a prolonged legal process.
The verdict was delivered by the Nagaon Sessions Court, which had earlier, on April 20, held all 20 accused guilty in the case. The sentencing marks a significant development in the case that had drawn widespread public attention across the state.
The incident dates back to June 8, 2018 ín Dokomoka ín Karbi Anglong District, when two youths, Abhijit Nath and Neelotpal Das, were brutally beaten to death by a mob at Dokmoka Panjuri village in Karbi Anglong district. The gruesome killing had triggered strong reactions nationwide at the time.
Meanwhile, family members of the victims expressed dissatisfaction over the court’s decision, stating that they were not content with the punishment awarded to the convicts.-----------
