Kolkata, 24 April (H.S.): A political controversy has emerged from the Kalighat area of Kolkata, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleging that one of its women workers was threatened and intimidated. The allegation was raised by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in a post on social media platform X on Friday.

According to the post, Bina Das, the BJP’s Shakti Kendra Pramukh of Ward No. 71, was targeted while carrying out door-to-door campaigning in support of her party. The incident reportedly took place around 7:20 PM on Thursday, when a group of individuals allegedly gathered outside her residence, surrounded her, and attempted to prevent her from continuing her campaign. She was allegedly subjected to threats and intimidation.

The BJP has termed the incident a violation of democratic rights, alleging that elements linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) are attempting to intimidate opposition workers, particularly women. However, there has been no immediate official response from the TMC regarding these allegations.

A complaint has been lodged at Kalighat Police Station. The BJP leader has urged the Election Commission of India to take immediate cognizance of the matter and ensure strict action against those responsible. Questions have also been raised over the role of the Kolkata Police.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, and further investigation is awaited.
