Chennai ,23 April (H.S.):Tamil Nadu recorded an unprecedented 84.69 per cent voter turnout in the 2026 Assembly elections, the highest since Independence, signalling a massive surge in public participation and political engagement across the State.

The polling, held across all 234 constituencies, saw voters braving intense summer heat to exercise their franchise, with long queues reported from early morning till the close of voting. The surge in turnout reflects heightened interest in what has evolved into one of the most competitive elections in recent times.

Departing from the traditional DMK-AIADMK binary, the 2026 election unfolded as a four-cornered contest. The ruling DMK-led alliance, headed by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, is seeking to retain power, while the AIADMK-led front under Edappadi K. Palaniswami is attempting a comeback.

The electoral landscape was further reshaped by the entry of actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which contested widely and drew significant youth attention. At the same time, Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) fielded candidates across constituencies, continuing to project itself as an alternative force rooted in Tamil identity and grassroots issues.

The presence of multiple players is widely seen as a factor behind the record turnout, with voters presented with a broader range of political choices. Analysts believe this fragmentation could significantly influence the final outcome.

Polling remained largely peaceful, with only isolated incidents reported from a few constituencies. Authorities ensured smooth conduct through tight security arrangements and voter facilitation measures across the State.

Women and first-time voters turned out in impressive numbers, underlining growing political awareness and participation. In several areas, women voters were seen outnumbering men.

With over 5.7 crore eligible voters, the election marks a defining moment in Tamil Nadu’s political trajectory. The results, scheduled for May 4, will determine whether the DMK retains power or if the opposition and emerging forces manage to alter the State’s political balance.
