Kolkata, 23 April (H.S.): Tension and clashes were reported from Domkal in Murshidabad district during the first phase of polling for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, following allegations that CPI(M) supporters were prevented from casting their votes by Trinamool Congress workers. Taking serious note of the matter, the Election Commission has sought an action taken report from the concerned administrative authorities.
According to reports, sporadic confrontations between supporters of the two parties had continued in the Domkal area since Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, allegations surfaced from the Raipur area that a section of CPI(M) supporters was stopped from reaching polling booths. Trinamool Congress workers were named in the accusations.
Local residents also alleged that central forces initially remained inactive and that immediate assistance was not provided by the state police. However, after receiving reports of unrest, state police personnel and central security forces rushed to the spot.
Security personnel later used public address systems to reassure residents and appealed to voters to cast their ballots without fear. Thereafter, Left supporters reportedly proceeded to polling stations and voted under the protection of central forces.
No immediate official reaction was issued by the Trinamool Congress regarding the allegations.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shubham Bajaj visited Booth No. 217, where the allegations of voter obstruction were raised, and reviewed the situation. He denied claims that the central forces had remained inactive.
Later, Humayun Kabir also visited the polling booth. During his visit, a section of voters surrounded him and staged protests, expressing their resentment.
The Domkal incident has added to political tension during the first phase of polling. The Election Commission has sought a detailed report while directing officials to ensure free and fair voting.
