Imphal, 18 April (HS): The Manipur government has withdrawn the temporary ban on mobile internet and data services, including VPN, in five districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur—following a review of the law and order situation and considering public inconvenience.

The restrictions were initially imposed on April 7 for three days after deterioration in the law and order situation. The suspension, which covered mobile data services, broadband, VSAT and VPN services, was subsequently extended multiple times. However, limited and regulated relaxations had been allowed for certain broadband services such as ILL and FTTH during the period.

According to the state administration, the decision to restore internet services was taken after assessing the ground situation and the widespread disruption caused by the shutdown. The restrictions had adversely affected the functioning of the High Court, district courts, healthcare institutions, educational establishments and departments dependent on digital platforms.

Additionally, work-from-home arrangements, financial and taxation services, electricity-related services, mobile recharges and LPG booking systems were also impacted due to the suspension.

The order to lift the restrictions has been issued by the Governor under provisions of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services Rules, 2024, in the interest of the public. The directive was enforced unilaterally in view of the urgency of the situation and is being disseminated through print and electronic media.

The state government has urged citizens to use internet and social media responsibly, warning that any misuse may lead to re-imposition of restrictions in the future.-----------
