Kolkata, 17 April (H.S.): The Calcutta High Court has set aside the transfer orders of doctors Debasish Haldar and Asfaqullah Naiya issued by the state Health Department.

Hearing the matter on Friday, Justice Ritabrata Kumar Mitra observed that the transfer process adopted by the Health Department was flawed and violated the standard operating procedures of the state’s health and medical education department.

Based on these observations, the court quashed the transfer orders. It is noteworthy that the court had earlier also cancelled the transfer order of another doctor, Aniket Mahato, in a related matter.

The controversy dates back to June last year, when the transfers of Debasish Haldar, Asfaqullah Naiya, and Aniket Mahato sparked protests. During the counselling process, the doctors were asked about their preferred postings as per rules. However, it was alleged that they were not assigned to their chosen locations.

Notably, the three doctors were among the prominent faces of a section of junior doctors who had launched protests following the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Further developments in the matter are awaited.
