New Delhi, 17 April (H.S.):
Harivansh Narayan Singh was unanimously re-elected Friday as Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for a consecutive third term, becoming only the third member to achieve this feat amid the absence of an opposition nominee. Leader of the House JP Nadda and Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge escorted him to the chair at the session's outset, symbolizing cross-aisle accord.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Harivansh, praising his seasoned stewardship and contributions to the Upper House's efficacy. Kharge extended best wishes, expressing hope for equitable opportunities across parties, while flagging the long-vacant Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker post since 2019 as antithetical to democratic norms.
Opposition voices echoed support, emphasizing Harivansh's pivotal role in upholding the chamber's dignity during his renewed tenure.
