Chirang (Assam), 17 April (HS): Tension gripped the Runikhata Forest Range Office in Assam’s Chirang district on Friday after a protest by local residents turned violent, leading to arson and widespread chaos in the area.

According to officials, an angry mob set fire to several vehicles of the Forest Department and parts of the office premises, creating a panic-like situation. The unrest reportedly stemmed from the detention of 25 Adivasi individuals by forest officials and police on Thursday over alleged encroachment on forest land. The detained individuals were being held at the Runikhata Forest Range Office.

Agitated over the action, a large number of locals gathered at the office on Friday morning and staged a protest, surrounding the premises. The situation soon spiralled out of control as the crowd turned violent and resorted to arson.

Police sources stated that personnel deployed at the scene had to resort to aerial firing to bring the situation under control. Additional security forces have been deployed in the area, and strict vigil is being maintained.

The situation remains tense, with local authorities urging residents to maintain peace and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.-----------
