New Delhi, 16 April (H.S.):

The government introduced three critical bills in the Lok Sabha during a special session today, promptly facing staunch opposition from Congress leader K.C. Venugopal. Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah countered that Venugopal could raise only procedural objections, not merits, promising robust rebuttals during debate.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal moved motions to present the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026, targeting women's reservation and seat reconfiguration. Home Minister Amit Shah proposed the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aiming to overhaul India's electoral and administrative framework.

Venugopal objected to all three—Constitution (131st Amendment), Union Territories Laws (Amendment), and Delimitation—labeling them untimely. Shah dismissed substantive critiques as impermissible, urging debate for substantive engagement.

Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav affirmed opposition to the trio but pledged unwavering support for women's quota, positioning SP as its foremost advocate without compromise. The session underscores deepening divides on democratic restructuring.
