Gandhinagar, 14 April (H.S.):

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday visited Lok Bhavan during her Gujarat tour and offered floral tribute to the portrait of Babasaheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the occasion of his 135th birth anniversary. Governor Acharya Devvrat and senior officials were present on the occasion, and the Governor also paid floral tribute to Babasaheb’s portrait.

Babasaheb Ambedkar, born into a Mahar (Dalit) family in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, earned doctorates in economics from Columbia University and the London School of Economics. He devoted his life to fighting social discrimination and untouchability against Dalits, while also strongly advocating the rights of women and workers.

As the chairman of the drafting committee of the Constitution of India, he played the most crucial role in laying the foundations of modern India. In the final years of his life, he renounced Hinduism and embraced Buddhism. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1990. Every year on April 14, Babasaheb is remembered as Ambedkar Jayanti or Equality Day.
