Kolkata, 09 March (H.S.): Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party raised the issue of women’s safety in West Bengal during the party’s Parivartan Yatra, launching a sharp attack on the state government. Addressing public meetings in South 24 Parganas and Siliguri, former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari claimed that women are not safe under the current administration and promised change if the BJP comes to power in the state.
Deb said that if the BJP forms the government in West Bengal, women will receive a monthly financial assistance of ₹3,000. He alleged that the state government is more focused on political interests rather than addressing the problems faced by the people. Deb also stated that the BJP aims to build a new and secure Bengal inspired by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, and Subhas Chandra Bose.
Speaking at a rally in Siliguri, Adhikari questioned the functioning of the state government over the increasing incidents of crimes against women. Referring to several cases, he said incidents such as violence against tribal women, the alleged rape and death of a minor in Hanskhali, the rape of a six-year-old girl in Rampurhat, and the murder of Tamanna Khatun have raised serious concerns about the law-and-order situation in the state.
Adhikari further alleged that in some areas tribal women were harassed and humiliated for supporting the BJP. He said that if the BJP forms the government, strict action will be taken against those responsible for crimes against women and justice will be ensured for victims.
He also highlighted that the central government has ensured the construction of toilets for women under the Swachh Bharat Mission and provided housing to lakhs of families in West Bengal through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. However, he alleged that the state government often renames central schemes and attempts to claim credit for them.
The BJP leaders asserted that the Parivartan Yatra is receiving widespread public support across the state and said the party aims to establish a government in West Bengal that ensures women’s safety, development, and good governance.
