Kolkata, 07 March (H.S.) : The Trinamool Congress has announced a three-member delegation that will meet the full bench of the Election Commission of India during its upcoming visit to Kolkata on Monday.
The delegation comprises Krishnanagar Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra, Rajya Sabha member Samirul Islam and West Bengal Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya.
According to party sources, the delegation will urge the Commission not to announce the schedule for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections until the ongoing judicial adjudication of voter documents marked under “logical discrepancy” cases is completed.
The Trinamool representatives are also expected to raise concerns regarding alleged irregularities detected during the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls, including instances where voters reportedly listed as alive were categorised as deceased.
The full bench of the Election Commission of India, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata on the night of March 8.
On March 9, the Commission will hold meetings with representatives of various recognised political parties from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Each party will be given 10 minutes to present its views before the panel.
Sources in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal, indicated that the Trinamool Congress, being the ruling party in the state, is likely to be given the first slot during the interaction.
Meanwhile, a crucial hearing in the Supreme Court regarding the judicial adjudication of the “logical discrepancy” cases is scheduled for March 10. Initially, more than 60 lakh voter documents had been referred for judicial scrutiny.
The final electoral roll for West Bengal, excluding the documents under judicial adjudication, was published on February 28. A supplementary list will be issued later in accordance with an earlier direction of the Supreme Court.
