Hyderabad/New Delhi, 6 March (H.S.): President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Shiv Pratap Shukla as the new Governor of Telangana as part of a gubernatorial reshuffle announced on Thursday night.

According to a communique issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, the incumbent Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been transferred and appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra.

Shiv Pratap Shukla, 73, is currently serving as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. A senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Uttar Pradesh, he served as Minister of State for Finance in the Narendra Modi government from 2017 to 2019 and was also a Rajya Sabha member representing Uttar Pradesh.

Born on April 1, 1952, in Rudrapur in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh, Shukla studied law in Gorakhpur and began his political career through student politics associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He joined the BJP in 1983.

He served multiple terms as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council before being elected to the Rajya Sabha.

As part of the reshuffle, Kavinder Gupta, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has been appointed Governor of Himachal Pradesh in place of Shukla.

In other appointments, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has been transferred to Ladakh, while former Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed Governor of Nagaland and Syed Ata Hasnain as Governor of Bihar. Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi has been transferred to West Bengal, while Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has been given additional charge of Tamil Nadu.

The appointments will take effect from the dates the respective incumbents assume charge of their offices.
