Lakhimpur (Assam), 29 March (HS): A controversy has erupted during the ongoing election campaign in Assam after a statement by Congress candidate Ghana Buragohain triggered sharp reactions. Addressing a public gathering last night, Buragohain reportedly said that “if a Congress government comes to power, no one will have the strength to evict Miya people,” drawing criticism from various quarters.
The remark has been viewed by opponents as an attempt to polarise voters and allegedly encourage a particular community while ignoring the concerns of indigenous people. Critics have accused the Congress leader of trying to consolidate votes by making provocative statements during the campaign.
Political observers believe that such statements could intensify tensions in the region, especially at a time when electoral activities are at their peak. Meanwhile, rival parties have strongly condemned the comment, terming it irresponsible and divisive.
The Congress party has yet to issue an official clarification on the matter.----------
