Malappuram, 27 March (H.S.):

Renowned Sopana music exponent Njeralathu Harigovindan has formally joined the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), marking a notable entry of a cultural figure into Kerala’s political landscape. He accepted party membership at Panakkad from state president Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal. Senior party leaders, including K.N.A. Khader, were present at the event.

Speaking after joining the party, Harigovindan said he was drawn to the League’s consistent emphasis on values and action. At a time when words and actions often diverge in politics, the League stands out for its commitment to what it practices, he said. He added that the party upholds humanitarian principles not merely in rhetoric but through concrete efforts, which inspired his decision to become a member.

Harigovindan also revealed that his inclination towards the Muslim League was not sudden. He said he had made it clear more than a decade ago that if he were to join a political party, it would be the IUML. With his induction, he is expected to actively participate in the United Democratic Front (UDF) campaign in the run-up to the upcoming elections.

Reflecting on the role of art and literature in society, he emphasised the need for cultural figures to contribute meaningfully to social harmony. He expressed concern that even those aligned with progressive movements in the arts and literary fields often remain silent in the face of growing communal polarisation, sometimes prioritising personal gains and positions.

Harigovindan is the son of the legendary Sopana music maestro Njeralathu Ramapothuval, who is credited with taking the traditional temple-based art form beyond temple premises and popularising it among the wider public. A recipient of several awards, Harigovindan has also authored three books on art and culture.
