Guwahati, 22 March (HS): The political journey of three-time MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed has taken a new turn ahead of the Assam Assembly elections 2026, as he has secured a ticket from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) after being sidelined by both the Congress and Raijor Dal.

Known as a vocal speaker in the assembly, Sherman Ali had initially planned to contest on a Raijor Dal ticket and was even nominated by the party. However, his candidature was withdrawn following Raijor Dal’s alliance with the Indian National Congress, reportedly under pressure from senior Congress leaders.

Following the setback, Sherman Ali promptly approached the TMC and was granted a ticket, marking his fourth political affiliation in his career. Political observers describe the development as a significant twist in the electoral dynamics of the region.

It is noteworthy that Sherman Ali was first elected to the assembly in 2011 on a ticket from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). He later won the 2016 and 2021 elections from Baghbar constituency as a Congress candidate before briefly joining Raijor Dal.

Meanwhile, under the leadership of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the TMC has released its second list of candidates for the Assam Assembly elections 2026. As per the list, Sherman Ali Ahmed has been fielded from the Mandia constituency in Barpeta district. Other candidates include Rosie Ahmed (Hajo-Sualkuchi SC), Abhijit Mazumdar (Guwahati Central), Inus Kumar Kandopan (Chabua-Lahowal), Paresh Bora (Moriani), Parimal Ranjan Roy (Karimganj North) and Aziz Ahmed Khan (Karimganj South).

The party has also announced a change in its first list, withdrawing the candidature of Dulu Ahmed from the Chamaria seat, while extending best wishes to all nominees for the upcoming elections.----------
