Hooghly, 22 March (H.S.):
A clash broke out between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers in Rishra, Hooghly district, on Sunday over wall writing, creating a tense situation in the area for some time.
The incident occurred in Ward 19’s Taar Bagan locality, where both parties confronted each other over control of a wall.
TMC Youth Congress leader Vishal Singh alleged that his party had obtained permission from the wall owner, whitewashed it, and was preparing to use it for campaigning by TMC candidate Tanmay Ghosh. During this, some BJP workers allegedly tried to write their slogans on the same wall.
When TMC ward secretary Harendra Tiwari and Singh intervened to stop them, a heated argument ensued, which escalated into a scuffle, Vishal Singh claimed. He further alleged that BJP worker Satyendra Singh assaulted him during the altercation.
The situation was later brought under control with the intervention of local residents.
On information, the police from Serampore police station reached the spot and assessed the situation. Authorities said an investigation into the incident is underway.
Efforts to get a response from the BJP leader accused in the matter were unsuccessful.
