Sonitpur (Assam), 22 March (HS): Former Congress leader Nitul Das launched a sharp attack on Congress President an MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging that the Congress MP has indulged in the “most politics” over popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Das made the remarks while announcing that he will contest the upcoming elections as an independent candidate after being denied a party ticket.
Das claimed that discontent against Congress is growing in several parts of Assam, including Barak Valley, where protests have reportedly been held against the party. He also alleged irregularities in ticket distribution, accusing party leaders of collecting money in the name of nominations and fielding controversial candidates.
Political tensions escalated in Sarupathar, where slogans such as “Go Back Gaurav Gogoi” and “Gaurav Gogoi Murdabad” were raised, reflecting public anger. Similar protests were witnessed in Tengani, further intensifying the political atmosphere in the region.
According to Das, he had actively campaigned for AJP candidate Jibon Chutia in the past, but now feels sidelined by Congress leadership. He also accused senior leaders like Ripun Bora and Rakibul Hussain of creating an environment in which “no self-respecting Assamese can remain in the party.”
Echoing similar sentiments, former Sonitpur District Congress president Dadul Barkakati, who recently quit the party, made explosive allegations. He claimed that despite paying money in the open “market of tickets,” he was denied candidature. Barkakati went on to label Gogoi as “Loraraja” and alleged that Congress has been weakened by internal factionalism and leadership issues.
The developments highlight deepening internal rifts within the Congress in Assam ahead of the crucial assembly elections.---------
