Murshidabad, March 22 (H.S.): A woman was allegedly beaten to death over a land dispute in Domkal area of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, triggering tension in the locality.

The police have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. An investigation into the incident is underway.

The deceased woman has been identified as Parvina Khatun, a resident of Faridpur in Jalangi. She was the third wife of Hobi Mondal, a resident of Domkal. According to sources, the couple got married around two years ago, and as a condition of the marriage, two kathas of land were registered in her name.

Family members of the deceased woman alleged that her husband and in-laws had been pressuring her to return the land after the marriage. She was allegedly subjected to torture for refusing to do so.

They further alleged that the dispute escalated on Sunday, when she was brutally assaulted, leading to her death. A relative, Rozina Bibi, claimed that she had been facing harassment over the land issue since her marriage. Her brother, Bapi Mondal, said she had informed the family about the abuse over phone, and they were planning to resolve the matter after Eid.

However, the accused Hobi Mondal claimed that his mentally unstable son, Yamin Mondal, attacked the woman with a wooden object, resulting in her death.

The police have arrested the accused and are probing all angles of the case.

Saurav Hossain, a representative of the Ghoramara panchayat, said the accused youth is mentally unstable and had displayed violent behaviour earlier as well. He said the woman was offering prayers when she was suddenly attacked. Villagers later caught the accused and handed him over to the police.
