Dhemaji (Assam), 21 March (HS): In a major setback ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, regional party Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) witnessed a wave of resignations in Dhemaji, with 10,332 registered members quitting the party en masse.
The development comes after the dissolution of 23 regional and 226 booth committees, as announced during a press conference on Saturday. District leaders stated that the decision was unanimously taken in a general meeting held on March 17.
Party functionaries cited dissatisfaction over candidate selection under the opposition alliance, alleging that AJP’s proposed candidate for the Dhemaji constituency was denied nomination in favour of a Congress candidate, triggering widespread resentment within the district unit.
Leaders also criticized the central leadership, claiming the move undermined the party’s grassroots strength and electoral prospects in the constituency.-----------
