Guwahati, 19 March (HS): Pabitra Margherita, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, on Thursday asserted that the first list of candidates released by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2026 showcases the inclusive social fabric of the state.
Addressing reactions following the announcement, Margherita said the candidate selection demonstrates representation from a wide spectrum of communities, including tribes and sub-tribes. He emphasized that Assam’s diverse social composition has been adequately reflected, ensuring participation from different caste, community and religious groups.
Highlighting the party’s focus on inclusive leadership, he noted that the list incorporates both women and youth, describing it as a blend of “Nari Shakti” and “Yuva Shakti.” He added that more than ten young faces, along with several grassroots-level party workers, have been given electoral opportunities.
Margherita further stated that the selection strategy underlines the BJP’s intent to promote emerging leaders while maintaining a balanced social representation across constituencies. He claimed that the list has received positive feedback from around 6.5 million party members in Assam, as well as from the general public.
The BJP has so far declared candidates for 88 out of the total 89 Assembly constituencies, with the final candidate expected to be announced shortly.-----------
