Kolkata, 18 March (H.S.): The Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in Kolkata, regarded as one of the most high-profile seats in the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, has once again emerged as the focal point of the state’s political battle. The contest has turned into a direct prestige fight after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in what is considered her traditional stronghold.

Political observers believe the outcome of Bhabanipur will not merely decide a constituency but could also signal the broader political direction of West Bengal.

-------

Social and historical significance of Bhabanipur

Bhabanipur, located in central Kolkata, is a completely urban Assembly constituency and forms part of the Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha seat. The area derives its name from its proximity to the famous Kalighat temple, one of the major Shakti Peethas dedicated to Goddess Kali. Owing to this religious association, the surrounding locality was historically referred to as Bhabanipur, meaning the abode of Goddess Bhavani.

The constituency presently covers eight wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Historically, the area developed from a small settlement during the British era and gradually became part of the expanding metropolitan city following the expansion of the East India Company’s administrative and commercial footprint.

By the 19th century, Bhabanipur had emerged as a prominent residential hub for educated elites, lawyers and professionals. The locality also played a significant role during the Bengal Renaissance, further cementing its reputation as an intellectual and cultural centre of the city.

---------

A neighbourhood associated with eminent personalities

Bhabanipur’s identity extends beyond politics, as it has long been associated with several prominent national and regional personalities. Among those connected with the area are Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Syama Prasad Mukherjee, former Chief Minister Siddhartha Shankar Ray and legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

Several noted figures from the fields of music and cinema have also been linked to the locality, strengthening its image as one of Kolkata’s most culturally significant residential areas.

Modern Bhabanipur: A blend of heritage and urban growth

Present-day Bhabanipur represents a unique blend of colonial heritage and modern urban development. While parts of the area still retain heritage mansions and colonial architecture, modern apartment complexes and commercial establishments have also expanded significantly.

The locality is considered among Kolkata’s premium residential zones, with a mix of traditional family businesses, modern retail outlets, educational institutions, offices and service establishments. High real estate values reflect its continued status as a preferred residential destination.

-------

Connectivity and important landmarks

One of Bhabanipur’s key advantages is its strong connectivity. The area is well served by Kolkata Metro, with Netaji Bhavan, Rabindra Sadan and Jatin Das Park stations providing convenient access to other parts of the city. Major arterial roads also enhance mobility and accessibility.

Important landmarks such as Kalighat Temple, Netaji Bhavan, Victoria Memorial and the SSKM Hospital are located nearby, adding to the administrative, cultural and historical importance of the constituency.

Electoral history and Trinamool Congress dominance

Bhabanipur has witnessed a dynamic electoral history. In the early decades after Independence, the Congress party enjoyed significant influence and won the seat multiple times. Left parties also had a presence during certain periods.

However, after the constituency was reintroduced following delimitation ahead of the 2011 elections, the political landscape shifted decisively in favour of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Since then, the party has retained the seat consistently, turning it into one of its safest constituencies.

Mamata Banerjee herself has used Bhabanipur to enter the Assembly after assuming the Chief Minister’s office. Her emphatic victory in the 2021 by-election further reinforced her political dominance in the constituency.

---------

Changing political context after 2021

In the 2021 Assembly election, Mamata Banerjee chose to contest from Nandigram, where she lost narrowly to Suvendu Adhikari, although the TMC retained power in the state. She subsequently returned to the Assembly by winning the Bhabanipur by-poll.

This sequence of events has made Bhabanipur central to Mamata Banerjee’s political journey and symbolic of her political resilience.

----------

Voter profile and electoral arithmetic

Bhabanipur has a fully urban voter base. Muslims constitute about 21.80 percent of the electorate, making them an important electoral demographic. Scheduled Caste voters account for about 2.23 percent.

The constituency also has a significant presence of middle-class, upper middle-class and business communities, making social balance an important factor in electoral strategies of major political parties.

-------

Voting trends and electorate patterns

Voting turnout in Bhabanipur has generally remained consistent with urban voting patterns, though it has seen periodic fluctuations. Past election data indicates steady voter participation, reflecting sustained political engagement among residents.

Another notable trend is the marginal decline in the number of registered voters over the years. Analysts attribute this partly to rising property costs, which may have prompted some residents to relocate to more affordable parts of the city.

------

Direct political showdown in 2026

The 2026 election has elevated the political significance of Bhabanipur after the BJP nominated Suvendu Adhikari, widely regarded as one of the party’s most prominent faces in the state. Mamata Banerjee is contesting from the seat as the TMC candidate.

Political observers suggest this could become the most closely watched electoral battle in the state. For the BJP, a strong performance here would carry symbolic and psychological value, while for the TMC the seat represents political prestige.

Given her strong electoral record in Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee is widely expected to rely on her established support base in the constituency rather than experiment with alternative seats as she did in 2021.

------

All eyes on Bhabanipur

Bhabanipur today represents more than just an Assembly constituency, it has become a symbolic political battleground in West Bengal. The Chief Minister’s personal prestige, the BJP’s aggressive challenge and the complex social composition of the urban electorate have together turned it into one of the most closely watched contests of the 2026 election.

The key question now is whether Mamata Banerjee will once again retain her stronghold or whether Suvendu Adhikari can engineer a major political upset. The election results will ultimately determine the outcome of this high-stakes political contest.
