Thiruvananthapuram, 18 March (H.S.):The Congress party is expected to release its second phase of candidates for the Kerala Assembly elections today, following a key meeting of the Central Election Committee (CEC) in New Delhi. The party is finalising nominees for the remaining 37 constituencies, with an announcement likely later in the day.

A major point of discussion remains whether sitting Members of Parliament will be fielded in the Assembly polls. The Congress high command is reportedly against giving tickets to MPs, though pressure from senior leaders and local units continues to build.

On Tuesday, the party announced its first list of 55 candidates, leaving several key constituencies undecided. Seats such as Kannur, Konni, and Perumbavoor remain under consideration due to internal differences and political sensitivities.

In Kannur, former KPCC president and sitting Kannur Lok Sabha MP K. Sudhakaran is firm on contesting the Assembly election, despite the central leadership’s reluctance. His supporters have staged protests across the district, underlining strong local backing. In Konni, senior leader Adoor Prakash is also keen to contest, adding to the leadership’s dilemma.

Perumbavoor is another sensitive seat. Sitting MLA Eldhose Kunnappilly is facing a sexual assault allegation, raising concerns within the party. The leadership recently sought his explanation, and with the case scheduled to be heard on March 26, there are fears that fielding him could have political repercussions.

As a result, the Congress is considering alternative candidates for Perumbavoor. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to persuade K. Sudhakaran to reconsider his stand, though he remains firm.

With several crucial decisions pending, today’s CEC meeting is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the party’s electoral strategy in Kerala.
