
New Delhi, 17 March (H.S.): The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking declaration of a national holiday on the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. The bench presided over by Justice Vikram Nath issued this order.The petition was filed by the Akhil Bharatiya Shiromani Singh Sabha. It argued that there is no clear policy on holidays in the country.
The plea highlighted that the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, is renowned as a patriot and historical figure. His jayanti is celebrated nationwide as Prakash Purb. Despite this, no national holiday has been declared for it across the country.The petition further noted that Sikhism is the world's fifth-largest religion.
Apart from the Weekly Holidays Act, there is no National Holidays Act in the country. This petition was originally filed in the Supreme Court in 2020.
