Washington, 13 March (H.S.): A suspect was fatally shot during an attack on Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday afternoon, with no injuries reported inside the building, according to police officials.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard confirmed the event unfolded around 1:35 p.m. local time when police responded to reports of gunfire at the synagogue in this Detroit suburb. The suspect emerged from a truck armed with a rifle, entered via the main door into a hallway, and was confronted by security personnel who opened fire.

Law enforcement sources indicated security neutralized the threat, though Bouchard noted the suspect was found dead in the vehicle, possibly from self-inflicted wounds common in such scenarios.

The truck contained mortar-like explosives that ignited upon impact, producing smoke; multiple individuals sustained injuries in the exchange.

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital and Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital treated eight injured security responders from the scene. Bloomfield police heightened security by 3:30 p.m., declaring no ongoing threat to the Jewish community; suspect identification remains challenging.

One of America's largest synagogues, Temple Israel houses a school with 140 students and staff present Thursday—all confirmed safe.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer labeled the attack a nightmare for every community, vowing no tolerance for antisemitism or violence.

President Trump condemned the incident, pledging a thorough investigation.
