Guwahati, 01 March (HS): Northeast Frontier Railway has strengthened its innovative Rail Coach Restaurant initiative across the zone, with 14 theme-based restaurants currently operational at key locations, including Raiganj.
Under this initiative, the unique dining facilities are functioning at Katihar and Jogbani, Raiganj, Darjeeling, Malda Court, New Cooch Behar, Rajabhatkhawa, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri Road, and New Mal, along with Guwahati, Uzanbazar, Kokrajhar and New Tinsukia. The growing popularity of these restaurants reflects NF Railway’s commitment to enhancing passenger amenities through creative and sustainable initiatives.
Chief Public Relations Officer of NF Railway, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, said on Sunday that further expanding the concept, the zone has awarded a five-year contract for operating a Rail Coach Restaurant at Raiganj railway station under Katihar Division. The move is aimed at promoting sustainable non-fare revenue generation for the Railways while strengthening passenger facilities.
The Raiganj Rail Coach Restaurant has been conceptualised as a distinctive railway-themed dining destination, developed from a refurbished railway coach. The restaurant blends nostalgic railway charm with modern hospitality standards. It is expected to cater not only to rail passengers but also to local residents and visitors, emerging as an attractive and inclusive dining spot in the region.
The initiative forms part of NF Railway’s broader vision of creatively utilising decommissioned railway coaches by converting them into appealing restaurants while preserving rail heritage. Across the zone, these Rail Coach Restaurants have earned appreciation for their unique ambience, quality food and customer-friendly service.
Besides significantly enhancing passenger amenities, the project is also generating employment opportunities, thereby contributing to local economic development and community growth. The initiative underscores NF Railway’s strong commitment to innovation, sustainable development and effective, passenger-centric utilisation of railway assets for long-term public benefit.-----------
