Adoor Prakash MP with Potti

Pathanamthitta,08 Feb (H.S.):

UDF Convenor and senior Congress leader Adoor Prakash has told the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Sabarimala gold smuggling case that he had no financial dealings with the prime accused, Unnikrishnan Potti, while admitting that he knew him personally.

According to sources, Prakash appeared before the SIT and recorded his statement as part of the ongoing investigation into the high-profile case. He categorically denied any monetary transactions or business connections with Potti, stating that their relationship was limited to personal acquaintance and friendship.

During questioning, Prakash reportedly reiterated the same explanations he had earlier shared with the media regarding photographs showing him with Potti. He maintained that the meetings were casual and social in nature, and not linked to any illegal or financial activities.

However, the UDF leader could not provide specific dates for his meetings with the accused. He said he was relying on memory to recall the timeline, and investigators are now cross-checking those details. Prakash told the SIT that he had known Potti since 2019, and officials are examining this claim as part of their probe.

He explained that he first met Potti at Sabarimala, where the latter had invited him to the inauguration of an annadanam (free meal) hall. He also admitted that Potti had visited his house on a few occasions. Later, Prakash said, he was invited to Bengaluru, where he was introduced to Potti’s friend Govardhan, a gold trader from Ballari.

Prakash emphasized that beyond these social interactions, there were no further dealings with either Potti or Govardhan.

He further stated that he had accompanied Potti to a meeting with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi only because he was invited, clarifying that the visit had no connection with any business or financial matter.

The SIT is said to be closely examining Prakash’s statement and assessing whether further clarification is needed. Sources indicate that he may be summoned again for additional questioning. Following his deposition, investigators reportedly called Potti for another round of interrogation to verify the claims and seek clarity on points raised by the UDF leader.

The investigation into the case continues, with officials scrutinising all personal and professional links connected to the accused.
