Weavers urge Governor to establish Linguistic Minorities Commission in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, 07 February (H.S.) : The All India Weavers Welfare Association has officially submitted a representation to Governor RN Ravi, seeking the formation of a State Linguistic Minorities Commission in Tamil Nadu.

The memorandum was handed over by the association’s president, Mecheri Prabhakaran, during a personal meeting held on the sidelines of the Periyar University convocation in Salem. The association emphasized the need for a dedicated institutional mechanism to safeguard the rights and welfare of various linguistic groups residing within the state.

During the meeting, Prabhakaran highlighted that a significant portion of Tamil Nadu’s population speaks Telugu, Kannada, Urdu, and Malayalam. He pointed out that many of these individuals, particularly from the Devanga weaving community, face substantial challenges regarding education, employment, and economic development.

The petition argued that while neighboring states have established similar commissions to protect minority interests, Tamil Nadu currently lacks such a specialized body to address the specific grievances of its linguistic minority citizens.

In response to the appeal, Governor RN Ravi assured the delegation that the petition would be carefully examined. The Governor’s statement acknowledged the concerns raised by the weaving community and the broader linguistic minority groups.

Association office-bearers and community representatives were present during the interaction, where they reiterated that such a commission is vital for ensuring social equity and protecting the cultural identity of those who contribute significantly to the state’s industrial and weaving sectors.
