Ottawa, 23 February (HS): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will undertake a visit to India, Australia and Japan from February 26 to March 7, his office said in an official statement on Monday.

According to the statement, the visit will focus on strengthening business engagement across trade, energy, technology and defence. Carney will begin his tour in Mumbai and New Delhi, where he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions are expected to centre on expanding the Canada-India relationship through partnerships in trade, energy, artificial intelligence, talent, culture and defence. He will also meet business leaders to explore investment opportunities and foster new partnerships between companies in both countries.

This will be Carney’s first visit to India after assuming office following Justin Trudeau. His office said the visit aims to unlock new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

India was Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner in goods and services in 2024, with two-way trade valued at nearly $31 billion. During the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit, both countries agreed to formally launch negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with the objective of doubling bilateral trade to $70 billion by 2030.

After India, Carney will travel to Sydney and Canberra, where he will meet Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The talks will focus on cooperation in defence and maritime security, critical minerals, trade and advanced technologies including artificial intelligence. He is also scheduled to address both Houses of Australia’s Parliament and meet business leaders and investors.

In Tokyo, Carney will meet Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae to discuss strengthening investment ties and cooperation in clean energy, advanced manufacturing, critical minerals and food security. Security and defence cooperation in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region will also be on the agenda.

Carney’s office said the visits are aimed at deepening ties with key Indo-Pacific partners and diversifying Canada’s trade and investment relationships.
